"I now have the hands and the knowledge to improve my crop yields!"
Akorige is a farmer from the Bongo District in Ghana. He is completely dependant upon his land and livestock for his prosperity.
Before Akorige was trained, yields from his land had been declining for five years, and were typically one bag of early millet and two bags or sorghum per plot. "The soils are too poor and cannot give me the necessary yields," Akorige said.
Since he has received training for the last three years he has constructed stone bunds and used new composting techniques on his land. These practices have dramatically increased the size of his harvest.
This year, even though the rains did not favour cereal production last year, his yields were five bags of early millet and six and a half bags of sorghum per plot. This provides food for his family even through the 'hungry season', as well as a giving him a surplus to sell.
