Meet Awuo-Ma:

Ghana

Having easy access to clean water has changed the life of Awuo-Ma.Before a borehole was introduced to the Tankoo community in Ghana she spent three quarters of her day collecting water.

Waking at dawn, she would walk miles to collect water for drinking and washing. Women suffered with cracked feet and dry skin due to the distance they had to travel and many would lose hair because they had to carry heavy water drums on their head for so long. Sickness was rife because water was dirty.

Since the borehole was installed, Awuo-Ma spends just one hour a day collecting water. She now teaches and works as an HIV/AIDS educator. She also hosts two women’s groups in the community to discuss issues affecting the welfare of women and children.

Awuo-Ma said: “Now I have an abundance of water unlike the former times. I have enough time to sleep, and do other jobs to earn money, and a lot of energy for developmental activities. I am overwhelmed by the difference it has made to the lives of my people."
