Meet Duut Bekanang:

Togo

"My family no longer suffers from hunger"

Duut Bekanang joined his village's farmer's group, supported by our local partner in northern Togo in 2001. Since adopting sustainable farming methods including composting and constructing stone bunds to stop soil eroding, Duut and his family now have enough food all year round.

"Formerly, I was not able to feed my family with the products of my farm for the whole year. There was always a gap of hunger of one to three months every year. Since I constructed stones bunds and started applying compost, my family no longer suffers from hunger."

Duut has also used new skills to grow a second crop during the rainy season. “I now grow two crops on the land, by sowing beans to harvest in the dry season as soon as I have harvested my maize. I was surprised by the harvest I had got!"

In fact Duut has such good harvests that he is able to sell his excess crop in the market place so he can now buy clothes medicines and school fees for his family.
