Memorable school trip to Kenya |
Self Help Africa hosted its ninth annual school trip to Africa, when a group of close to 30 students and teachers travelled to Kenya over the Easter holiday break.
Students and teachers from eight schools took part in the trip, which included visits to a number of Kenyan schools, with community groups, and with others with whom Self Help Africa is working in the country.
Participants on the trip included MacEgan College, Macroom, Colaiste Chriost Ri and Clonakilty, Co Cork, from Clonkeen College and Muckross College in Dublin, and from Lucan Community College. A delegation representing the European School in Brussels, and a number of teachers from a primary school in Blarney also travelled.

| Writing in her journal about the nine day experience that she had had of Kenya, one of the students wrote that the trip had made her very aware of poverty.
She stated however that the visit had completely changed her perspective "from a very abstract one, to a very real and emotional one".
A teacher who travelled talked of "the unbelievable spirit" of the Kenyan people whom they had met, and said that it was fantastic for him to see at first hand where they money they had raised for Self Help Africa was being invested.
"Self Help Africa is targeting the people who are most in need. It is clear they are helping people in really practical ways, giving them water, and helping them to farm using improved techniques, and in a sustainable way".
