Improving farmer access to seed |
Self Help Africa hosted a major workshop on the development of systems to improve farmer access to improved seed, in Ethiopia recently.
Hundreds of representatives from farming bodies, the development sector and research institutions attended the event, which exchanged experiences and promoted approaches to local seed multiplication designed to improve the production and distribution systems for improved quality seed in rural areas.
The event was the first such learning exchange promoted by Self Help Africa. It included contributions from across a range of experience, including that of smallscale farmers involved in local seed multiplication in SHA programme areas.
The workshop also provided an opportunity for other contributors to share experiences in the area of seed system development in other African countries.
The participants attended a range of workshops, seminars and field visits, and covered a wide area including the integration of the informal and formal seed sectors, food security challenges presented by a changing climate, seed certification, plant breeding, and upcoming legislation in Ethiopia on seed production. |
