Kimira Water Project:

Eritrea

INTRODUCTION
The Kimira Water Development Project is an initiative to develop a clean and sustainable water supply for people and livestock in and around Kimira village in the Afambo district of Eritrea’s Southern Red Sea region.

LOCATION
Situated on the fringes of the Danakil Depression – the lowest point in Africa and the hottest and continent’s hottest and driest region, and Kilmira Project is seeking to provide a sustainable water supply in a region where seasonal temperatures soar into the mid-50s centigrade, and where water shortages are common.

ECONOMY
Nomadic and semi-nomadic subsistence agriculture is the main economic activity in Eritrea’s Southern Red Sea, where farm families must spend much of their time traveling in search of water.

There is little tillage farming in the region, as most farm households are sustained by keeping herds of livestock – mainly goats and camels.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The project is a collaboration between Self Help Africa and the Ministry for Agricultural Promotion and Development. It involves the construction of water reservoirs, of piping, of waater points, and of drinking troughs for animals.

The objective is to alleviate water shortages for householders and semi-nomadic communities, support the irrigation needs of nomadic lifestock, and support small scale irrigated farming in the area.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
The Kimira Water Development Project will construct a central dam and reservoir, install nine kilometers of water pipelines, and establish water distribution points for householders, and of drinking troughs for animals.
