INTRODUCTION
The Smallholder Markets and Agriculture Resilience Transformation Project (SMART) was commenced in early 2012 and is a two-year scheme designed to improve food security and climate resilience of target communities in southern Ethiopia.

The project is taking place in fourteen districts within two provinces in southern Ethiopia -Oromia and SNNPR. In Oromia work is takingplace in Arsi Negelle, Munesa/Shashemene, Kofele, Adaba, and Dodola woredas (West Arsi Zone); Ziway Dugda, Adami Tulu Jido Kombolcha, and Dugda woredas (East Shewa Zone),

The location being covered in SNNPR are: Lanfuro & Silti woredas (Silte Zone), Shashogo woreda (Hadiya zone), Kacha Bira woreda (Kembata Timbaro zone), Sodo and Meskan woredas (Gurage zone.)

PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The project is designed to improve the economic well being of 36,500 smallholder farming families, and strengthen the resilience of communities in a drought affected region of southern Ethiopia.

This will be achieved by supporting improved agricultural production, crop diversification, income generating measures, and other activities that are designed to improve the welfare of smallholder farmers in fourteen districts of the two regions.

The EU-backed two-year scheme is being undertaken in collaboration with international agencies IDE and Oxfam, and local NGO SOS Sahel, as well as farmers unions, agricultural institutions, and government line ministries.
