Alemaya II was the second area based project being undertaken by Self Help Africa, in Ethiopia's Eastern Highlands.
The primary objective of the project, which completed a six years development cycle in 2008 was to increase food and livelihood security for 22,500 farm families in the area.
The project distributed sorghum, maize and groundnut to thousands of farm families on a revolving fund basis, and also promoted crop diversification through the distribution of mixed vegetable seed, irrigated horticultural prodution and other activities.
Hundreds of thousands of mixed tree seedlings were planted, while gulley regeneration, enclosed planted areas and measures to manage the local water table were implemented as a part of a wide ranging environmental rehabilitation programme in the area.
Farm families in the area were encouraged and supported to develop homestead coffee production as an alternate cash crop, while savings and credit co-operatives were developed to support a range of off-farm enterprises at a local level.
The project also supported the construction of dug wells for clean water provision, established user management groups, and assisted with a range of non-formal education initiatives and training programmes. |
