INTRODUCTION
Rongai & Gilgil rural development programme is working to enhance food production and livestock development for households in Rongai, and strengthen the institutional capacity of local groups and institutions in Rongai and Gilgil.

LOCATION
Rongai and Gilgil divisions of Nakuru district in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province, north of the capital Nairobi.

ECONOMY
The main industry in Gilgil district is agriculture, and flower growing (floriculture) is also a source of significant employment. Upwards of 70% of the population are supported by small-scale farming, while surrounding game reserves and tourism businesses provide further employment.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The project objective is to enhance food and livestock production for 1,000 households within Visoi and Lengenet areas of Rongai division, to strengthen the institutional capacity of groups and institutions in both Rongai and Gilgil, and to enhance community environmental management in both areas.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
The project is seeking to enhance food and livestock production for 1,000 households within Visoi and Lengenet areas of Rongai division.

It is also providing training and technical support to strengthen the institutional capacity of groups and institutions in both Rongai and Gilgil, and to enhance community environmental management in both areas.

Local groups in Visoi and Lengenet locations of Rongai are being supported with the provision of improved access to safe clean drinking water.

In Thome, Gilgil, work is underway on the construction of a new primary school that is providing education for 148 students, and has six teachers. Funding support for this project has been provided by individual private donors, by trusts and foundations, and by students and teachers of Clonkeen College, Dublin.
