The Rongai Integrated Food Security and Livelihoods Programme began its work in Nakuru District of Kenya's Rift Valley Province in 2009.
Covering the five administrative locations of Kampi ya Moto, Lengenet, Rongai, Boror and Makongeni, the programme covers an area of 744 square km, and is designed to improve food and livelihood security within a local population of 96,255 people.
Agricultural land use includes ranching, dairy cattle farming, maize, wheat, millet, beans and some sisal production.
The programme seeks to implement an integrated food security and livelihoods programme in three locations, including: Lengenet, Boror and Rongai - directly targeting 53,018 people.
Current project activities in Rongai include:
Initiatives to increase crop and livestock production and productivity of smallholder farmers.
To improve marketing of agricultural produce and promote the development of 3 Farmers Associations in Rongai Division by December 2012.
To improve environmental conservation and wise use of natural resources through establishment of tree nurseries, tree planting and soil and water conservation.
To enhance irrigation by establishing one (1) irrigation scheme in Rongai Division.
To mainstream HIV and AIDS and Gender issues into the programme activities by the end of 2012.
To improve access to potable water for domestic use by December 2012.
To strengthen the capacity of local institutions, beneficiaries and staff for enhanced engagement in participatory planning and action and lesson learning.
