Self Help Africa’s Malawi programme is a combination of directly implemented area based development programmes, and series of partner programms known as FAIR, which is a joint initiative with two other international NGOs: Find Your Feet (FYF), a British NGO, and Development Fund (DF), a Norwegian NGO.
The projects in Central and Northern Malawi are implemented through local partners, and projects in Kalembo and Masumbankunda are directly implemented.
The central part of Self Help Africa’s work in Malawi involves helping people to grow enough food to feed their families, with a focus on agro-ecological farming practices. Another priority is helping communities to find alternative ways of earning an income to reduce their reliance on rain-fed farming.
Our work in Malawi builds the skills and experience of local organisations to improve their work with rural communities through technical support and encouraging partners to learn from each other.

Landlocked Malawi is among the world's least developed countries. The economy depends on substantial inflows of international aid. Progress toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals has been hampered by the spread of HIV/AIDS and the droughts between 2001 and 2005, which affected five million people.
Harvests are generally poor due to a lack of agricultural inputs and a reliance on rain-fed agriculture. 40-60% of rural households face chronic food insecurity for between two and five months every year.
