Ntchisi and Dowa Districts:

Malawi

This is a new project currently in planning phase. It will bring together two years of work from two of our partners.

One of the partners, CICOD (Circle for Integrated Community Development), specialises in sustainable agriculture.

CICOD has been implementing a project in Ntchisi over the last two years which focuses on conserving local seed varieties to improve the livelihoods of over 425 farming families.

The project has promoted good nutrition and the role of women as custodians of seed banks.

Linkages between community, national and regional conservation efforts have been explored in an effort to influence new policy measures that protect farmers’ rights.

Our other partner, TAPP (Trustees of Agricultural Promotion Programme), has been working in Dowa on a livestock-based food security project to improve the livelihoods of 500 poor smallholder households.

TAPP has introduced small stocks such as goats and rabbits as micro enterprise assets that families can use to generate income and buy food.

The new project will bring together the strengths of CICOD and TAPP to form an integrated sustainable agriculture and livestock project in the neighbouring districts of Ntchisi and Dowa.
