Self Help Africa has been working in Togo since early 2005, when the organisation began supporting a series of well established projects in the north west of the country.
These rural development projects, at Dapaoing, had been supported a number of years by the UK charity TRAX, until it closed that year. The primary focus of the work is on supporting measures to assist communities to grow enough food, and have more sustainable livelihoods. |
Togo achieved its independence from France in 1960. In the decades that followed the country was governed by the military rule of Gen. Gnassingbe Eyadema, until his death in 2005.
In the 1970s poor harvests, rapid population growth and severe drought put strains on Togo's food supplies, prompted the government to launch a 'green revolution' with the aim of making the country self-sufficient.
Despite this, and other initiatives, Togo is still not food self-sufficient, and nearly one quarter of the population suffers from malnutrition. |
