Self Help Africa's Kamuli programme, which worked for a period of five years to improve food and livelihood security in a district of close to 170,000 people, was completed in 2009.
The focus of the project was on strengthening systems for food and livelihood security, as well as improving access to basic social services such as health, education and clean water supply.
The promotion of crop diversification, improving access to improved quality seed, and improving links to agricultural support services were undertaken during the programme work in the Kamuli area, with particular focus paid in latter years on means of adding value in the production of maize and cassava.
Several processing plants were constructed for this purpose, while elsewhere the revolving of loans for farm inputs, for livestock, including goats and poultry, and for micro-finance was carried out.
A programme of natural resource management and environmental rehabilitation was undertaken, with demonstration plots being formed for the presentation of environmental management strategies and approaches. |
