INTRODUCTION Kayunga RDP is a rural development programme being implemented by Self Help Africa in Central Uganda. Work started in 2007, and is scheduled for completion in 2011.
LOCATION Kayunga District is a district in Central Uganda. Named after its 'chief town' Kayunga, which is 46 miles north-east of the capital Kampala, the district consists of two counties - Bbaale and Ntenjeru, and has a total population of 297,000 people.
ECONOMY Agriculture is the main economic activity in Kayunga district and represents 90% of the total employment. Kayunga practices two types of agriculture: livestock farming and subsistence agriculture and crop production. Some of the crops raised in the district include:cassava, pineapple, maize, matooke, etc...
PROJECT OBJECTIVE Self Help Africa is working to improve the livelihood of rural people in a sustainable manner through supporting and ensuring household food security, improved household incomes, and improved access to basic social services.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES The primary focus of the project is on improving agricultural productivity for approximately 17,400 housedholds in Kayunga District by the end of 2011, and to increase incomes by an average of 20% over the same period.
The rural development programme is also seeking to increase access to and utilization of basic social services (hygiene and sanitation) by 30%, to support the diversification of household incomes, promote the active participation of women in development activities, and to promote the sustainable use of natural resources.
