| NORTH WEST PROVINCE: | Zambia |
| The objective of this North West Province programme is to support sustainable natural resource use, economic empowerment and self reliance amongst communities in this area.
Specific Objective The programme is working with the West-Lunga Trust (WLT) to support the development of local level institutional structures that will promote effective community-based natural resource management.
Activities The West-Lunga Trust (WLT) is a community based natural resource management initiative located in the Chibwika-Ntambu Game Management Area in North-West Zambia.
The Trust's aim is to achieve community empowerment, sustainable resource use and economic prosperity. The Trust is seeking to provide support and guidance to communities neighbouring the West Lunga National Park and surrounding Game Management Areas to achieve meaningful resource management.
The WLT strategic approach is to support building knowledge and expanding community capacity for resource management thereby delivering confident, capable community leaders and institutions. Local level institutional building is thus a key requisite to resource management in the operational area.
Recent activities Activities in the recent past included capacity building and training for West-Lunga Trust members, support wildlife scout patrols, development of educational facilities, promotion of conservation activities and farm training.
Communities benefitting from the programme included villages adjacent to Chibwika-Ntambu Game Management Area in North-West Zambia, specifically around the areas of Chibwika (south) and Ntambu (south east) in the region around Mwinilunga town. | Chibombo Rural Livelihoods Project
| The main objective of this three-year project is to reduce poverty by improving the livelihoods of 6,000 rural people. Self Help Africa aims to enable these people to meet their food and other basic needs on a sustained basis. The project started in July 2006.
The three key aims of this project are:
•Increased family food production
Soil fertility, water conservation practices, crop rotation, and pot holing are some of the methods that have been adopted. After being ecourgaed to diversify their food crops grown, farmers in the project area have grown maize, sorghum, cowpeas and groundnuts. Off-season farming is promoted so that families can feed themselves all year round. Self Help Africa is also training local seed producers for seed security.
•Increased diversity of household sources of income
Rural people are trained in basic business skills and community enterprises are promoted. These include local out-grower schemes and producer groups. Local communities are also trained to improve the marketing of their produce.
•Creation of a network of independent community led organisations supported by a strong local NGO
Having effective local groups is key to self sufficiency and development. Through local partners, Self Help Africa organises the formation of farmer groups where people can share ideas about what works. Self Help Africa works closely with our local partner in Chibombo, OPAD, to increase their capacity to implement the programme. We also implement HIV/AIDS awareness training.
