The Chikwanda-Mukungule Initiative for Poverty reduction project (CHIMU-IPR) is a project implemented by North Luangwa Wildlife Conservation and Community Development Project (NLWCCDP).
The project was born as a result of a concern to improve the livelihoods of some of the poorest people living in the Game Management Areas (GMAs) and aims to enhance wildlife conservation through increased participation of local people in the management of wildlife resources.
The overall aim of this project is to reduce poverty for 6,000 of the poorest people in Mpika District, Northern Province, Zambia. The project will assist 1,000 families to meet their basic socio-economic needs through self-help initiatives.
The specific objectives are outlined below:
•An average increase in family food production of 50% in a year of average rainfall.
•An average increase in household cash incomes of 30%.
•Increased capacity of local development organisations to promote effective, locally driven development organisations able to respond to the needs of their members.
•Effective monitoring and evaluation of the project to establish a range of procedures to ensure that the project is effectively monitored and evaluated.
