Rights to Seed:

Zambia

This project, which began in 2006, addresses the issue of sustainable local seed production and aims to improve access to appropriate and affordable seed for up to 10,000 rural families, approximately 60,000 people.

Local seed producer groups will are established and linked with national seed associations, seed companies, regulating institutions and gene banks.

The project focuses on three areas: Kaoma District in Western province, Mpika District in Northern Province, and Chibombo District, Central Province.

In the advocacy activities the project hopes to ‘represent’ the sector as a whole: 650,000 small scale farming families throughout Zambia.

Rosemary Mwango could only afford one meal a day in 2005. She is now a certified seed grower and her annual income has risen from $50 to $700.
