Pamela’s gift has changed the lives of thousands… |
“In Eastern Zambia, the majority of people are small-scale farmers who grow only maize or groundnuts. Their crop production is low and it is difficult to sell their produce if there is any left after feeding their families. They can’t afford to send their children to school.” |
The legacy of Pamela Smith is helping to change this situation. When she sadly died in 2004, her gift – in the form of a residuary legacy – helped us to work with local organizations to teach people how to earn a living by growing different crops and developing small businesses.
Elia explains, “Before the project, farmers were only producing enough food to sustain themselves. Now they have now learnt skills like beekeeping, sunflower production and vegetable growing. They are able to get their produce to market and earn a living.”
By 2010, this one gift will have contributed to 30,000 poor people being able to earn a sustainable living, eat all year round and pay for the basic necessities like schooling, housing and healthcare.
