Become a local speaker

If you are good in front of a crowd then becoming a local speaker is a great way to put your talent to good use. We are a small charity, so we rely on local speakers to tell groups across the UK about our work. Becoming a local speaker is also a good way to get more involved in your local community and meet new people.

How would I be helping?

  • Promoting our work by giving talks to groups in your area such as schools, Young Farmers, Rotary, faith groups etc
  • Raising awareness of Self Help Africa within your community
  • Receiving donations following your talks
  • Writing to local press to get publicity for your event – we’ll show you how

What skills do I need?

  • Confidence when speaking to a crowd and enthusiasm for telling people about our work. We will support you as much as we can to build your confidence as long as you are willing to try.
  • Links to local groups such as schools, youth groups or faith groups would be useful but not essential.
  • Confident in meeting new people.
  • To be reliable, committed, punctual and trustworthy.
What training will I receive?

Once you’ve enquired, we will arrange a time for you to come in to our office to talk more about the role and receive training. We will equip you with everything you need to get started, including:

  • PowerPoint presentations about our work with up to date case studies about families whose lives have changed.
  • Resources such as newsletters, posters, a short film, T-shirts and collection boxes.
  • A starter pack with FAQs, tips for presentations and guidance on how to get into your local press.
As part of your training, we will make every effort to link you up with other speakers and supporters in your area so you can attend their talks and work together.

How do I get started?

Please email rachel.wilbrey@selfhelpafrica.org, call our office on 01743 277170, or fill out an enquiry form to find out more.
