INTRODUCTION Self Help Africa’s Agricultural Development programme is seeking to support food production and environmental rehabilitation measures at several locations across Burkina Faso. An estimated 2,500 households.
LOCATION The project covers areas including more than a dozen villages in Zondome, Bazèga, Kourritenga, Boulgou, Doulougue, Central East, and Bam Provinces.
ECONOMY Subsistence agriculture is the main economic activity in the region, where access to water is limited, and where soil quality is poor and difficult for farming. Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world, with few natural resources, and limited employment opportunities for its people.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE The project's objective is to support farming communities to grow more food, to support the rehabilitation of farm land and promote sustainable farming techniques, and to assist rural farmers to diversify their sources of income.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES Self Help Africa is working with a number of local partner NGOs and community based organisations (CBOs) in Burkina Faso.
In collaboration with PER (Projet Ecologique et Reboisement) the organisation is working to support 100 farm families to rehabilitate farmland and grow alternate crop varieties at Sika and Laogha villages.
With ORGANIC (Organisation pour une Nouvelle Initiative Communautaire) the work is taking place in five villages in Bazega Province, where improved agricultural techniques are being promoted, soil fertility activities are being supported, improved seed is being made available, small livestock enterprise is being supported, and honey production is being promoted.
Local partners ASCDIS (Association de Solidarite Communautaire pour un Developpement Integre au Sahel) are supporting sustainable agricultural development work, and Wend Yam CoOperative are promoting beekeeping as an alternate farming enterprise for rural households.
