Self Help Africa in Togo

Self Help Africa has been working in Togo since early 2005, and is involved in supporting a range of agricultural development, water, and natural resource management activities in the region around Dapaong.

The work is being undertaken through our local partners TRAX Togo, and involves crop production, access to seed, market oriented horticulture, gender and HIV/AIDS awareness, natural resource management and improving local access to clean water.

Togo country profile

Togo achieved its independence from France in 1960. In the decades that followed the country was governed by the military rule of Gen. Gnassingbe Eyadema, until his death in 2005.

In the 1970s poor harvests, rapid population growth and severe drought put strains on Togo's food supplies, prompted the government to launch a 'green revolution' with the aim of making the country self-sufficient.

Despite this, and other initiatives, Togo is still not food self-sufficient, and nearly one quarter of the population suffers from malnutrition.
