Dairy and livestock production opportunities are being developed by Self Help Africa in Holeta, Ethiopia

Adding value to dairy production

The development of dairy farming is one of the primary activities taking place under Self Help Africa's Agricultural Co-Operative Development Programme (ACDP), in Ethiopia.

13 primary dairy co-operatives, with a total membership of just under 500 farmers are being supported by the programme, taking place on the highland dairy pastures at Holeta in Eastern Shewa, more than 40km west of the capital Addis Ababa.

Livestock production in Ethiopia
Livestock production is an integral component of almost all farming systems in West Shewa. Cattle and oxen are a traditional feature of arming in the region, but while they have been employed principally for the production of meat and to provide draught power, a significant volume of the country’s (albeit modest) dairy production has also originated around Holeta and its environs.

Self Help Africa has provided a range of supports to these dairy co-ops, including :
• Organizational training in co-op management and administration
• Support with the introduction of 47 cross breed (Dutch Holstein/Ethiopian Borna) heifers
• Construction of three collection depots
• Bulk stocking of veterinary treatments to be disbursed on a ‘revolving fund’ basis
• Dairy production facilities to ‘add value’ to produce
(cheese, butter) including 3 churners, 3 milk separators and a large number of milk churns for local farmers
• Training on hygiene and best practice in milking, storage and transportation
• Training in dairy cow management, in forage crop production and management
• 20 quintals (2000 lbs) of concentrated dairy feed mixer to supplement feed and boost yields

Project co-ordinator Belew Damane says that the initiative has enabled co-op members to boost their milk yields from 4-6 litres per day to 16-20 litres per day, and has enabled producers to yield 4.5 birr per litre, as opposed to the previous price of 2.5 birr.

More and more co-op members were also now engaged in adding value to their raw produce – with 20 litres of raw milk (value : 90 birr) capable of producing one kg of butter and 3 kg of cheese (value : 130 birr). Not alone was this generating a better price (1kg butter worth 70 birr; 1 kg of cheese 20 birr) - it also added significantly to the shelf life of dairy produce coming from the farm.
