Thousands turn out for New York StreetFest and Self Help Africa |
Thousands of New Yorkers turned out on Stone Street in downtown Manhattan on May 22nd, and raised vital funding for Self Help Africa in the process.
The day-long event - organized by bar and restaurant owners on Stone Street - will benefit a water project in rural Togo, in West Africa.
The pubs and restaurants on Stone St - Becketts, The Dubliner, Mad Dog and Beans, Stone St Tavern, Ulysses, Smorgas Chef, Waterstone Grill, Burger Burger and Adrienne's Pizzabar - joined together to throw a street-wide party. And they committed to donate 20% of all takings from the day to Self Help Africa.
The proceeds from the day will go to the provision of wells for rural communities in Togo. These wells will provide more than water - they will allow a community to grow food, sell their produce, and trade their way out of poverty.
The overall project in Togo aims to improve the livelihoods of 2,500 families (15,000 people) in 50 poor rural communities in the Savannah regions.
Funding from the StreetFest goes towards a specific element of the programme for 2010, which aims to improve access to clean water through building new wells, repairing existing boreholes, and providing a basic health and sanitation education programme
