Self Help Africa has been working in Ghana since early 2005, and is involved in supporting a range of rural development programmes in the far north of the country close to Bolgatanga.
Our local programme partners in the area are TRAX Ghana, who support rural households to farm in a sustainable manner, and who assist local groups to produce more on their small farms. Support is provided for group development, provision of community training, and other resources. |
Ghana became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to gain its independence, in 1957.
Although well endowed with natural resources, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. Gold and cocoa production, and individual remittances, are major sources of foreign exchange.
The north of the country is highly susceptible to drought, and has also experienced substantial deforestation, overgrazing, and resulting soil erosion. In 2006 Ghana signed a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement, which aims to assist in transforming the country's agricultural sector.
