How will my donation help?

Self Help Africa aim to provide farmers in rural Africa with the skills necessary to produce their own seed. your donations will go towards helping quality seed production, which will provide food and an income for seed growers, increased harvests for farmers sowing the seed and reduce poverty and hunger.

Aims

To enable farmers and seed growers to produce increased quality seed in a diverse range of crops.

Activities

» Increase & Diversify certified seed production, ensuring greater quantities of different cash and food crops.

» Provide access to new varieties – working with research institutes to develop varieties adapted to different agro-ecological environments

» Build capacity of relevant structures ensuring active, viable seed enterprises & develop business skills and links to markets for farmers & growers

» Build a body of evidence and ensure dissemination to inform the development sector of ISSD thinking & wider agricultural development practice.

Success will mean smallholder farmers will have enough food to feed their families all year round, have money to pay for essentials and have the skills to try new activities.

5 Simple fundraising ideas

If you don't want to donate straight out of your pocket, how about organising a fundraising event in November to raise around £100?

There are some simple ideas below that are quick to organise.

Please call us on 01743 277170 or email infouk@selfhelpafrica.net with your fundraising plans so we can offer advice and tips.

1. Collection box
Download the collection box, cut it out, stick it together and place it on your desk! Place your spare change in the box and get your family or work colleagues to do the same.

2. 50/50 raffle
The 50/50 raffle itself is incredibly simple. Buy a book of raffle tickets and sell as many tickets to each person as they want, for a fixed fee of £1 or £5. Give the participant one half of the ticket and place the other half in a bucket or box. At the end of the event draw a ticket from the bucket and announce the winner. The prize is the half of the amount collected from ticket sales. The other half is donated to Self Help Africa.

3. Dinner party
You could theme it on African food or get everyone to bring a dish. You could use a website called Dinner 4 Good to invite guests and collect donations online. Easy peasy!

4. Supermarket collection
This is an easy way to raise £100 in a day. You need to call your local supermarket to see if they have space for you to hold a collection in November. Saturdays are best.

5. Guess how many
This is very simple and requires very little equipment. You will need a large jar and something to fill it with like sweets, marbles or nails. Put the jar in a public spot for a week and sell guesses for £1. Make a note of their name, phone number, and guess. Run the contest for a week and then announce the winner and give them a share of the total money raised.

Or how about...
...A mini football tournament, a murder mystery evening, a guess the baby photo competition, a sponsored Sudoku race, an autumn scavenger hunt, a cross dressing day at work or a barn dance.
