Pauline Kenna from Westmeath on her recent visit to Ethiopia with Self Help Africa.

Memorable visit to Ethiopia for supporter group

A group of fund-raising supporters of Self Help Africa returned recently, following a memorable field visit to Ethiopia.

The party of more than 25 flew out from Dublin in late October, and spent eight days visiting Self Help's projects, and local communities in the Sodo, Huruta and Bora areas of Ethiopia.

The Irish visitors enjoyed a great rapport with Ethiopian children, during their visit
Supporters from close to a dozen counties across Ireland travelled, after organisating a wide variety of fund-raising events and activities to fund their trip.

Included in the party was Anthony Walshe from Co Mayo, who organised a horse auction fund-raiser during the Summer; Albert Doherty and Ellen McDermot from Donegal, who also travelled with Self Help on it's 2007 trip to Kenya, and mayor of Waterford Dr. Tom Higgins, who has been a long standing supporter of Self Help's work.

A number of Irish secondary school teachers - Annette Kavanagh Bracken and Rachel McGrath from St. Wolstan's School in Celbridge, Co. Kildare; and Sarah Jane Buckley and Mary O'Leary from MacEgan College in Macroom also travelled with the party, to forge school linkages in Ethiopia, as part of the Irish Aid supported 'Worldwise' scheme.

They met teaching counterparts in a number of schools where Self Help is working, and will strength their school to school ties in the months ahead.

Teresa O'Connor from Ardmore in Waterford said that the trip had been a memorable one. 'We visited schools, irrigation projects, health clinics, small farms, agro-forestry operations, market gardens and other projects. The message we would like to bring home is that a little money can go a long way in Ethiopia'.

Ellen McDermott from Donegal was particularly impressed by the savings and credit co-operatives. 'Small loans are helping farmers to develop their holdings, and to pursue off-farm income generating activities.'

'They are often focussed on women, and by giving them an independent source of income are also very empowering', she added.
