Donate from your salary

Self Help Africa’s long term projects help poor communities in nine African countries to grow enough food to feed themselves. You could make a difference by choosing to Pay as You Earn.

It's tax efficient

When you choose Payroll Giving your donation is taken from your pay before tax is deducted. So, for each £1 you wish to donate, you will receive the tax benefit and only pay 80p from your salary. So it costs you less to give more!

Simple for you and great for us

Payroll Giving is extremely simple to use. Once your donation is set up, you don't have to do any more. Each week or month, as regular as clockwork, Self Help Africa will benefit. This enables us to better plan projects and benefit more communities - payroll giving provides us with a regular source of income that can be relied upon in a way that one-off donations cannot - month in month out.

In return for your support, we will write to thank you. And you will see how you are making a difference to African families through regular email updates and newsletters containing photos and stories from our projects.

What do I need to do now?

To sign up for payroll giving, check with the payroll department of your company to make sure that your employer has a payroll giving scheme in place. If your company does have a scheme, you complete a form which is usually obtained from your Payroll Department or Personnel. The form asks you how much you want to give.

Your employer will forward your completed form to the PGA Payroll Giving Agency and deduct from your pre-tax salary the total amount you want to give. Your donation is forwarded monthly to the PGA and they then distribute the gift each month to the charity or charities of your choice.

If they do not offer a scheme, suggest that they start one - it is easy and inexpensive to run. They can find out more about how to get started in the HMRC Guidance for employers.
You will be eligible for Payroll Giving provided that you are an employee or pensioner and that your employer deducts Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax from your pay or pension.

What you can achieve
£7 will...
provide a family with 6 hens - they use the eggs for nutrition, manure for compost and pass on chicks to others
£10 will...
provide a family with equipment to build an improved mudstove which uses less wood than old stoves. Women can spend less time looking for fuel
£15 will...
buy a pack of locally produced quality seeds. This seed will give families the chance of a better harvest
£25 will...
buy one goat for a family. The milk can be drunk and the manure used to improve crops. Families then pass on goats to others in their village or sell them
