| Thanks to everyone who took part, the Tosca Silent Auction is now closed
We’ve had a wonderful response from former patrons and staff for Tosca Pops Up on October 26th. So much so, that we’re offering Self Help Africa supporters and friends the opportunity to grab some unique art, memorabilia and other goodies, even if you can’t make it on the night.
100% of funds raised from the auction will go towards supporting African farmers to lift themselves out of poverty.
Artwork can be viewed at Smock Alley from Monday, October 22 – Thursday, October 25 and on the night itself. Other items will be be displayed at Tosca Pops Up.

| | Thin Lizzy, Black Rose, by Jim Fitzpatrick Size: A2 (594mm x420mm) Digital print from the original artwork (1976), signed by the artist. €150 reserve. Market value: €195
Renowned illustrator and Tosca regular Jim Fitzpatrick says it best... "Black Rose is possibly the most iconic of all my Thin Lizzy covers and it is certainly one of my most original graphics.
Philip wanted me to try to create, quite literally, a ‘black rose’ for the cover of the album of the same title. It was really difficult as I wanted more than just a rose, I wanted something that reflected Philip’s love of the poem ‘Dark Rosaleen’ by James Clarence Mangan: ‘Oh, there was lightning in my blood, my Dark Rosaleen!’
This was a song about the yearning for liberty from English rule and Philip knew it by heart.
Another poem was my inspiration for the blood coming from the rose; it was a famous religious poem by Joseph Mary Plunkett, one of the rebel leaders executed in 1916 after the Easter Uprising. His poem was titled: ’I see his blood upon the rose’ and I took my cue from that.
Philip was electrified when he saw the final result and he rang me: ‘Jaysus, Jim, you have me sussed! It’s just like I imagined it but better. Effin brilliant!’
By the way: Roísín Dubh translates as Dark Rose (aka Dark Rosaleen)’. | | “What’s behind the magic door?” by Leah Hewson Date: 2011 Dimensions: 76cm by 64cm Reserve Price: €200
